My interests. #22 As soon as I read about the defish option in the new em1 II firmware, I ordered the Olympus 8mm pro lens. I immediately updated the len's firmware to version 1.1 when it arrived today.These first photos are taken with this lens using an em1 II body. The first uses the natural fisheye mode. The second uses the defish setting activated in the new version 2.0 firmware. These give an idea of how wide this lens is, even in the defish mode.I am going to find this lens very useful with the defish option activated. It's small, fast, and very sharp, perfect for my travel needs. I can live with the distortion evident on the far right and left sides. To defish video. I have used the Kdenlive video editing software for this effect. Right click on the video timeline, and select "Defish":This brings up the "Defish" video effect settings:I've found that using the "Equiarea" type, and an amount of 855 works well. Alternatively, use "Stereographic" and an amount of 825. Or you can experiment and see what you like the most.Using this technique, I have made an example of a video sequence both without and with defishing. The video shows the street gamblers often seen in the Stockholm old city:Again, we see that the output video is almost rectilinear. For most practical purposes, this is good enough. Also, in the corners, the resolution is not as good as in the centre, just as we saw in the image example above. This is especially evident when viewing the video at 1080p.ConclusionDefishing image and video is easy. The output images are not perfect, but considering how extremely wide they are, I'd say they are pretty good.To avoid the stretched look in the corners, you could apply somewhat less defishing effect. This will leave some residual barrel distortion, but also leave more resolution in the corners. This could be an option if you have an image with few straight lines.In this article, I have looked at how much wider the defished output image is compared with using a rectilinear wide angle lens.

I will keep that in mind as I test the Samyang 7.5mm that I just bought.For what it is worth, when I just look at the photo (compared to examining it in detail) I do not see any edge distortion at all. I am sure it is visible if someone looks carefully and, of course, I do not actually know what the room looks like, other than the photo, but it all seems natural to me when just glancing at the photo.That is a very appealing function. Last edited: Mar 7, 2018 #25 The 'distortion' at the sides is just plain rectilinear distortion from being so wide. Other than that, I do see some residual barrel distortion in the furniture. Also take note that the example lacks any major detail in the corners, so you won't notice

From another perspective, it’s easy to put your feet into the image accidentally.The AoV is far wider than a rectilinear 7mm lens, even if you crop the edges a fair bit.Andrew-- hide signature --Infinite are the arguments of mages. But the corners will be really ugly so you can trade center vs corner softness by cropping differently or using a different projection.
